Cal Maritime Crew
Golden State
Indoor Rowing Championships – February 3, 2007
In an early test
of endurance and pain thresholds, two Cal
Maritime rowers, Mariko Abe and Jon Daniel,
participated in the Golden State Indoor Rowing
Championships (GSIRC) on February 3rd
in Sacramento. An official qualifying event for
the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Indoor Rowing Championship in
Boston, the race drew over 200 athletes in
various age and experience levels interested in
competing head to head for 2000 meters with
others on indoor rowing machines. Those with
fast enough times qualify for the C.R.A.S.H.-B.s,
host to 1,500 rowers from around the world.
Although neither Mariko nor Jon advanced, both
put in strong showings for this early in the
sprint season. Mariko, a Japanese exchange
student in her first year of rowing, finished
fifth in the Women’s Collegiate Lightweight
event in a time of 8:31.5. Jon, rowing for just
four weeks after a year away from crew, finished
in tenth place in the Men’s Collegiate Open
event, missing a higher placing by just 2
seconds.
The Keelhaulers officially kick
off their spring racing season with the Davis
Invitational on Sunday, March 4th, at
the Port of Sacramento. All CMA boosters are
invited to come out and support the team.
