Novice Four Takes First at Head of the Lagoon

Sunday, November 9, 2008 – On Sunday, Cal Maritime took first place in one race and third in two others at the Head of the Lagoon Regatta in Foster City. The 5,000-meter course winds through residential areas and under three bridges, making it a challenging course for coxswains and rowers, alike. In addition, Sunday’s regatta included very breezy conditions, providing a combination of crosswinds, tailwinds and headwinds, depending upon the location on the course.

The Keelhaulers competed in the men’s open eight, the men’s intermediate four, and the women’s open eight.

In the men’s intermediate four, the Keelhaulers’ novice crew took first place, ahead of Stanford and Stockton Rowing Club, in a time of twenty-four minutes and twenty seconds. In the women’s open eight, Cal Maritime finished third in 21:51, just four seconds behind UC San Diego and twenty-five seconds behind Bair Island Aquatic Center. The men’s open eight also finished third in 20:49, ahead of UC Davis and a Santa Clara boat.

With the conclusion of the fall head race season, the Keelhaulers will shift gears and prepare for the spring sprint season with the Long Beach Christmas Regatta on December 7th.

Men’s Novice Four – Mike Litzenberger (coxswain), Mike Catchings, Joe Morales, Charlie Judge, and Lee Blume.

Women’s Open Eight – Brittany Wilson (coxswain), Kalisha Donnelly, Chelsea Martin, Marisa Why, Alex Perl, Megan Braun, Beth Runciman, Maxine Kantor, and Kristen Swader.

Men’s Open Eight – Brittany Wilson (coxswain), Matt Mossinger, Mike Hess, George Schneider, Robert Lindsay, Mac Sandison, Greg Johnson, Aaron Weiner, and Steve Shults.
