Cal Maritime Crew
Blue Heron
Regatta – March 25, 2006
The Cal Maritime crew team posted a strong
showing at the Blue Heron Regatta in Eureka,
Ca. Rain showers dominated much of the regatta,
and the ebbing tide affected times, but
predicted strong winds never materialized,
allowing crews to focus on racing rather than
keeping afloat. Following up their strong
finish at Long Beach, the Keelhaulers earned
medals in all four of their races.
In the women’s novice four, the crew of Julie
Dodson (coxswain), Alicia Bryant, Kristen
Swader, Megan Braun, and Ellen Lee finished in a
time of 8:24.33, just seven seconds behind
Humboldt State and four seconds behind Seattle
Pacific University, and ahead
of Mills College and Willamette Rowing
Association. In the men’s varsity four, the
crew of Emily Ramos (coxswain), Tommy Stillwachs,
Jake DeMello, Mike Hess, and Matt Mossinger
finished in a time of 7:29.41, third behind
Seattle Pacific University and Humboldt State.
In the men’s novice four, CMA entered two
boats. With the ebbing tide slowing down times,
the crew of Julie Dodson (coxswain), Matt
Mossinger, Sam Gerlach, Joe Swindel, and Ken
Christie finished second behind Seattle Pacific
in a time
of 9:02.38. In third place, just five seconds
behind, was the crew of Kristen Swader
(coxswain) Mike Hess, Jacob Benz, Peter Suhonos,
and Grant Hager. Finally, in the men’s open
eight, the crew of Emily Ramos (coxswain), Tommy
Stillwachs, Jake DeMello, Scott Burback, Grant
Hager, Matt Mossinger, Sam Gerlach, Joe Swindel,
and Ken Christie finished third behind Humboldt
State and Seattle Pacific in a time of 6:52.35.
For many of the CMA rowers, this was their last
week of competition. However, the varsity eight
will compete in one last regatta, the San Diego
Crew Classic, on April 1st and 2nd.
The Keelhaulers will be pitted against schools
from California and across the country,
including Loyola Marymount, Sonoma State, Orange
Coast College, UC
Irvine, Texas, and Notre Dame.
