Cal Maritime Crew
Head of the
American - 29 Oct
05
The Cal Maritime crew team converged on
Sacramento on October 29th for the
Head of the American, a 3-mile course on Lake
Natoma. The day started out overcast and cool,
but the water was ideal for rowing – flat with
only a little wind. The Keelhaulers competed in
three races – the men’s open four, the men’s
open eight, and the women’s open four. In the
women’s open four, the crew of Julie Dodson
(coxswain), Jessica Wood, Helen Longo, AnaLisa
Stewart, and Hannah Reeves competed against
crews from Cal Berkeley, Sac State, Long Beach
State, USC, Sonoma State and Long Beach State.
The women had a strong finish, completing the
course in a time of twenty-four minutes and
thirty-five seconds. In the men’s open four
race, the Keelhauler crew of Domonique Pongun
(coxswain), Tommy Stillwachs, Jake DeMello, Matt
Mossinger, and Grant Hager finished in a time of
20:01 against crews from Stanford, Long Beach
State, UC Davis, Sac State, Loyola Marymount,
Santa Clara University and Sonoma State. The
men’s eight crew of Emily Ramos (coxswain),
Tommy Stillwachs, Jake DeMello, Jack Rouse,
Jacob Benz, Joe Swindel, Mike Miller, Ken
Christie, and Matt Mossinger finished in a time
of 19:39 against crews from Stanford, UC Davis,
UC Irvine, Sonoma State, Sac State, Long Beach
State, Humboldt State, Santa Clara, and Cal
Berkeley.
Next up for the Keelhaulers will be a trip to
Southern California for the Newport Autumn
Rowing Festival, to be held November 6th
in Newport Beach.
