Cal Maritime Crew

Head of the Lagoon - 14 Nov 04

The Cal Maritime rowing team traveled to Foster City, California on November 14 to race in the Head of the Lagoon.  The 5-kilometer race course offered a number of challenges, including sharp turns, jutting docks and three bridges, but the CMA team met those challenges and had strong second-place finishes in each of its four races.

In the third race of the day, the men’s novice eight, with Emily Ramos (coxswain), James Benjamin, Konrad Bruesehoff, Stephen Coutts, Billy Dick, Georgon Lapham, Andrew Libby, Michael Mees, and Justin Taschek, rowed the course in a time of 21 minutes and 33 seconds, narrowly beating out Sonoma State University for second place behind Cal Berkeley.  In the women’s open four, the crew of Ruth Cervantes (coxswain), Julie Dodson, Heather Higgins, Karla Barton, and Jenna Berkey had a strong finish, placing second behind Santa Clara University in a time of 27:40.  The men’s open four crew of Matt Moore (coxswain), Nick Moore, Pat Ciulla, Billy Dick, and Jake DeMello placed second behind Marin Rowing Association in a time of 21:15.  In addition, CMA fielded a mixed eight, a combination of men and women, and finished a strong second behind Sonoma State University.  That crew included Matt Moore (coxswain), Kate Barrett, Karla Barton, Julie Dodson, Jeremy Louke, Justin Taschek, Pat Ciulla, Jake DeMello, and Nick Moore.  For many of the rowers, the mixed eight event was their second race of the day, which meant that they rowed a total of 20,000 meters (the equivalent of 12.4 miles) for the day.

Cal Maritime will conclude its fall racing season with the Long Beach Christmas Regatta, an 850-meter sprint, on December 5.  We invite any and all Southern California boosters to come out and support the team.
