Cal Maritime Crew
Head of the
Port, Sacramento - 17 Oct 04
The Cal Maritime
rowing team posted a strong performance in its
first race of the fall season on October 17 at
the Head of the Port in Sacramento, California.
With only four returning rowers and coxswains
competing in the regatta, the majority of the
team got its first taste of competitive rowing,
a 5.7 kilometer head race through the Port of
Sacramento. Three boats competed in two races on
Sunday. In the men’s open eight, the crew of
Matt Moore (coxswain), Pat Ciulla, Billy Dick, Jake DeMello, Konrad Bruesehoff, James Benjamin,
Daniel Padilla, Nick Moore, and Cameron Haynie
finished in a time of 23 minutes and 43 seconds.
In the same race, the crew of Emily Ramos
(coxswain), Justin Taschek, Jenna Berkey, Kevin
Reinhardt, Andrew Libby, Georgon Lapham, Michael
Mees, Shane Kennedy, and Stephen Coutts finished
in a time of 25:22. In the women’s open four,
the crew of Ruth Cervantes (coxswain), Julie
Dodson, Heather Higgins, Kate Barrett, and Jenna
Berkey finished in a time of 35:22.
Competing against teams from UC Davis, Sac
State, Cal, and Humboldt, Cal Maritime crew
performed well in conditions that included rain,
wind, choppy waters, and cool temperatures. The
regatta was a positive experience for the rowers
and coxswains and will help them prepare for
their next race, the Head of the American at
Lake Natoma in Sacramento on October 30.
