Cal Maritime Crew
Long Beach Spring Regatta – March 19, 2006
In a sign of their continued improvement over
the course of the year, the Keelhaulers earned
medals in four of their six races at the Long
Beach Spring Regatta.
In the first men’s novice four race, the CMA
crew of Julie Dodson (coxswain) Scott Burback,
Jacob Benz, Tyler Burns, and Peter Suhonos was
running second halfway through the race when
both starboard rowers caught crabs, flipping the
shell. While the rowers and coxswain were safe,
the four did not finish the race. In the second
men’s novice four, the crew of Domonique Pongun,
Joe Swindel, Sam Gerlach, Ken Christie, and
Grant Hager finished second behind Long Beach
State in a time of 7:39.4. In the men’s open
four, the crew of Emily Ramos (coxswain), Tommy
Stillwachs, Jake DeMello, Mike Hess and Matt
Mossinger finished in a time of 7:35.3 in second
place behind Loyola Marymount University. The
men’s open eight of Emily Ramos (coxswain),
Tommy Stillwachs, Jake DeMello, finished second
behind Long Beach State and ahead of Chapman
University in a time of 6:35.3. The women’s
open four of Emily Ramos (coxswain), Jessica
Wood, Julie Dodson, Alicia Bryant, and Kristen
Swader also finished second behind Long Beach
State and ahead of Chapman University. In the
final race of the day for CMA, the women’s
novice four of Domonique Pongun (coxswain),
Jessica Wood, Kristen Swader, Megan Braun, and
Ellen Lee finished third in their heat behind
Loyola and Chapman.
Overall, the regatta was a breakthrough
performance for many of the rowers, hopefully
helping to pave the way for next week’s Blue
Heron Regatta in Eureka.
