The Cal Maritime crew team posted a solid
performance in its first regatta of the fall
season on October 14 at the Head of the
Port, a five-kilometer course in Sacramento,
California.
The men’s varsity eight competed in the open eight
event against Santa Clara University, Sonoma
State, UC Davis, University of the Pacific,
and Sac State. Coxed by fourth-year
coxswain Emily Ramos (’08, ME), the boat
finished seventh out of eleven in a time of
nineteen minutes and twenty-six seconds.
The men’s novice eight, coxed by first-year
coxswain Anna Thompson (’09, MET), had only
rowed together three times prior to Sunday.
Despite that, they finished ninth in a time
of 23:47.
The women’s varsity four competed in the women’s
open/collegiate four against eleven other
boats, including six from Division I
programs. Again coxed by Emily Ramos (’08,
ME) the Lady Keelhaulers finished a very
strong sixth in a time of 22:01, only
twenty-six seconds out of fifth place.
The varsity boats will use their performances at the
Head of the Port to help prepare for their
next race this coming weekend at the Head of
the Charles in Boston, Massachusetts on
October 20th. The novice squad will have
two weeks to prepare for the Head of the
American on October 27th at Lake
Natoma in Sacramento, California.
