Cal Maritime Crew
Newport Rowing
Festival - 7 Nov 04
The Cal Maritime
rowing team had a longer than anticipated
journey to Southern California for the Newport
Autumn Rowing Festival in Newport Beach. A
faulty coolant hose in the chartered bus
stranded the majority of the team for three
hours on the trip down to Southern California.
Despite missing out on practice time on Saturday
as a result of the breakdown, the team put in a
strong effort at the regatta on Sunday. The 4.6
kilometer course offered a little of everything
– some sharp turns, bridges, docks and active
marina traffic, along with a little drizzle.
Overall, however, it was a good day for racing,
with smooth water and moderate temperatures.
The Keelhaulers
competed in four races – the men’s open eight,
the men’s novice eight, the women’s open four,
and the men’s open four – against a variety of
other crews, including USC, Sac State, UC Davis,
UCLA, Orange Coast College, San Diego State, and
UCSD. The men’s open four of Matt Moore
(coxswain), Nick Moore, Pat Ciulla, Billy Dick,
and Jake DeMello turned in a time of 19 minutes
and 27 seconds. The men’s novice eight of Emily
Ramos (coxswain), Justin Taschek, Michael Mees,
Andrew Libby, Matt Prewett, James Benjamin,
Kevin Reinhardt, Shane Kennedy, and Stephen
Coutts finished in a time of 20:41. The women’s
open four of Ruth Cervantes (coxswain), Julie
Dodson, Kate Barrett, Karla Barton, and Jenna
Berkey completed their race in a time of 27:52,
and the men’s open eight finished in a time of
22:14.
Cal Maritime
returns to Northern California to race at the
Head of the Lagoon in Foster City on November
14.
