In the latest Collegiate Water Polo
Association Polls, the Cal Maritime Men's
water polo team is currently ranked 12th in
the country. The Keelhaulers jumped
off to an impressive start at Cunningham
Pool, where the Keelhaulers sank UC
Berkeley, currently ranked 10th, and Saint
Mary's College in a round robin event.
The
Keelhaulers then traveled north to the UC
Davis Fall Water Polo Tournament. CMA
lost the opening game to UCLA by 1, dropping
5-4 after leading 4-3 going into the fourth
quarter. The Keelhaulers were able to
get back on track with an impressive win
over Texas A & M. Every member of the
Keelhauler squad saw action in the 9-5 win.
Next stop was with the reigning National
champions Michigan St. They showed why with
an 11-4 victory. The Keelhaulers mounted an
attack but were repeatedly turned away by
the goalie Ben Shantz.
The fourth
game was with a fast University of Utah
team. Cal Maritime were faced with a 0-4
deficit before starting their comeback.
When the dust settled, the Keelhaulers
walked away with a 10-9 win. The last
game of the tournament for the Keelhaulers
was with a familiar Cal team and again Cal
Maritime got off to a slow start.
The sluggish start was too much for the
Keelhaulers to overcome as they fell to Cal
10-6.
The water
polo team has a short break to prepare for
an NAIA tournament at Claremont. Then
our conference season begins with two
northern league tournaments, one hosted by
UC Davis and one hosted by Cal Maritime at
Cunningham Pool. These tournaments
will serve to to earn seeding rights for the
conference championship at Cal Poly, SLO.
