CMA Sailors Capture Two Divisions at the Fall Championship!

It must have been an act of vengeance for laser sailors, Paige Johnston('09) and Brian Malouf('11) as both of them captured the two laser divisions at this past weekends PCCSC Fall Championship. After an unsettling performance at the PCC Single-handeds, this duo played the master in the trying conditions of Santa Barbara. Johnston edged out Hawaii in C-division while Malouf sail impressively in the D-division. Freshman skipper Erik Glaser continued to prove himself in the tough PCCSC fleet by finishing 9th in his first ever Varsity regatta. Andrew Freeman, sophomore crew, continues to establish himself as the go-to crew in the big events. Cole Davis('10) and Alli Jolls('09) sailed in the FJ A-division.

FIRES CAUSE FROSH SOPH REGATTA TO RELOCATE

Cal Maritime Sailing competed in the Frosh/Soph Regatta this past weekend. The event was hosted by the UC-Santa Barbara team in conjunction with the UC-San Diego team. Competing for CMA were sophomores, Thor Proulx and Andrew Freeman and freshmen, Bryan Buffaloe, Brian Malouf, Chase Young, Erik Glaser, and Tyler Wolk. Conditions over the weekend were quite variable and proved difficult for the fleet. Only 6 races were completed in each division before sailing was canceled early Sunday afternoon after the breeze finally quit. Erik Glaser sailed impressively and narrowly missed winning his division. Brian Malouf finished 2nd in A-Division with crew Andrew Freeman. The two teams representing CMA finished 5th and 7th.

CMA Dinghy Sailing travels again to Santa Barbara in two weeks to battle in the fall championship at the North-South Intersectional. CMA looks to improve upon its 5th place in the 2006 edition.

CMA Fight Hard Battle at PCCs

The PCC Singlehand Championships were held this past weekend at Stanford University. Vying for the two national berths were Paige Johnston('09), Brian Vanderspek('10), Bryan Buffaloe('11) and Brian Malouf('11) against 20 other collegiate men from California and Hawaii. Freshman standout Malouf started the regatta with a first place but starting troubles plagued his run at the championship despite a steller late regatta run. Johnston ended the first day in 2nd place, but unfortunately couldn't distance himself from eventual qualifer Chris Wenner of Cal. On race 12, Vanderspek, who appeared to be winning the race, suffered an unfortunate dismasting ending his day early. As the breeze picked up, Bryan Buffaloe showed his strong ability in the breeze with great performance to end the regatta. CMA finished the regatta with 3 in the top-10. Hawaii's Mark Spector won the event. This upcoming weekend, CMA challenges again for a nationals berth with the PCC Sloops Championship at Richmond YC in J/22s."

Cal Maritime Sailing Team 5th at Stoney Burke

The Cal Maritime Dinghy Sailing Team started its season off this past weekend at Treasure Island at the Stoney Burke Intersectional Regatta. Twenty-two teams from California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington sailed under variable conditions Saturday and Sunday. Sailing in their first collegiate regatta, Freshman skipper, Brian Malouf and sophomore crew, Andrew Freeman sailed to a 4th place finish overall in B-Division in the tightly, competitive fleet. They scored their first bullet of many to come in the 7th race. Junior duo of Paige Johnston and Alli Jolls sailed A-Division for the Keelhaulers to help round the team out for a 5th Place overall. This is CMA's best result at the Stoney Burke Regatta in many years.

Sailing in the JV division were sophomores Cole Davis and Seth Devoll in A-division and senior Nathan Prather and freshman Chase Young in B-Division. These two teams sailed showed great depth in the CMA program and will likely be challenging for the Varsity spots throughout the season.

Keelhaulers win Shields Trophy, 4th time in 5 years

For the fourth time in the last five years, the California Maritime Academy has captured the prestigious Shields Trophy in sailing competition at the U.S. Naval Academy.  In two days of competition against teams from Navy, the Coast Guard, King’s Point Merchant Marine Academy, St. Mary’s college and maritime academy entries from Massachusetts, New York, Maine and the Great Lakes, the Cal Maritime crew emerged triumphant.

The Shield’s Trophy format involves a series of races, all using Navy 44 sloops supplied by the Naval Academy.  CMA finished in the top three in every one of the seven races.  The team included four freshmen (Tyler Wolk, Evan Wanamaker, Katy Love and Bryan Buffaloe), and three sophomores (Robert Proulx, Charles Davis and Brian Vanderspek) along with senior Nathan Prather.

The next big event will be the Kennedy Cup Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta, also held at the Naval Academy, November 2-4. That’s a very big event for collegiate sailing and we’ll be competing against top schools with strong sailing teams such as Navy, King’s Point, and the University of Rhode Island.  It will be a good test of just how strong the 2007-08 Cal Maritime offshore crew really is.  We’ve finished second in the Kennedy Cup the past two years to URI and Navy respectively, and we have strong hopes for taking the top prize this year.
