Marin Catholic wins Keelhauler Regatta

A beautiful day on the Carquinez Strait greeted the 80 plus high schoolers for the 2nd annual Keelhauler Regatta at Cal Maritime on February 3rd.  By 9:00 a.m. the breeze was already a steady 8 knots out of the east.  Current is the real challenge of sailing on Morrow Cove. Many suffered OCSs by getting pushed over the line in the 2 knot flood around mid-day when the breeze maxed out at about 10 knots. Nine races were sailed in both divisions.  A division was dominated early by San Mateo's Brian Malouf and crew Mike Deady finishing first in the first four races.  They faltered in the 7th and 8th races dropping to 3rd place in the division.  Redwood's  Nick Dogdale and crew Jared Shenson sailed consistently beating out Danny Cyard and Michealla McCloskey of Marin Catholic by just four points.

The B division was dominated by Matt Van Rensselaer and crew Jacqueline Day of Burlingham finishing out of the top three only once and collecting 4 bullets to finish with just 19 points.   Marin Catholic's Scott Lynch and crew Christina Nagatani were solid with mostly top three finishes scoring 31 points.  In third place was Jojo Florian and crew Dylan Eichenberg sailing for Stevenson with 50 points.

The team scores came down to scoring penalties from the Z flag at the starts.  Both the A & B division of Marin Catholic stayed out of trouble with no penalties or OCSs taking the 1st place overall.  San Mateo/Burlingham were up with 9 bullets between them but suffered two penalties putting them in 2nd place.  Redwood Varsity came is third.

Inaugural Keelhauler a Huge Success

REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:

The Inaugural Keelhauler Regatta got underway with sunny skies and 12 kts of breeze out of the west. The ebb current (2.3 kts) and eddies along the shore made for some interesting racing. Spectators on shore had ring side seats to watch the 55 boats from 38 different high schools sail seven races. The breeze built to 15 kts and shifted to the North then lightened later in the day. In A division the San Mateo/ Cupertino team won handily with 5 firsts and a final score of 22 points. In B division, Redwood High Varsity stayed in the top five in all but one race to take their division. The overall winning team using the combined A & B division scores was San Mateo / Cupertino with the solid win in A division and 3rd place in B division. In 2nd place overall was Marin Catholic and third went to Acalanes.

Thanks to the Cal Maritime Sailing Team and Alumni for race committee, the students of
Emergency Services Response Unit for running the coach and spectator boats,
Liz Frangos for scoring and all the volunteers who helped carry the boats
down the gangway. After racing, sailors enjoyed the live music of
"Castaway" as trophies were presented to the top three finishers in each
fleet as well as the the top three teams.

The participants enjoyed the day and look forward to competing here again.
The parents who had a front row view from grass along the waterfront were also thrilled with the venue.

Said one parent 'Thanks to you and your staff for an excellent regatta! I was so impressed with the numbers of helpers, their competence and courtesy. We'll be back again!"
