As the first weekend of October rolled around the
corner, the Cal Maritime Sailing Team hit the bay
running once again on their One Design 48 sailboat,
competing this time in the 2008 San Francisco Yacht Club
Leukemia Cup, a benefit to support the Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society. 104 boats from around the bay came out
on Sunday October 5th to support this event,
and Mother Nature cooperated. It was a beautiful day,
the winds were ranging from 10-15, and Cal Maritime had
the fastest boat in their class of 11 of the fastest
boats in the regatta. The course took them on a tour of
the bay, from Angel Island to Harding Rock, near San
Quentin, and back to Belvedere in just under and hour
and 45 minutes. After a long race of ups and downs, they
finished just under eight minutes before a 32 foot
high-performance sport-boat, and just under 9 minutes
before a 60 foot cruiser/racer as the nearest
competition. After the handicaps of the boats adjusted
the finish times, Cal Maritime picked up the third place
position by a close margin to the sport boat, Taboo,
and a 40 foot racer/cruiser Desdemona.
Congratulations to the team.
