The California Maritime
Academy recently celebrated a great
Homecoming weekend with many wonderful
festivities. Included among these
events was the 2nd annual Men's
Basketball Alumni game which saw 15
former Keelhaulers battle it out on the
court with the team wearing the white
Keelhauler home jerseys prevailing by a
score of 73-71.
While there was great
action on the court, Head Coach Bryan
Rooney remarked that today was about
much more than the final score, "We are
really excited about the growth of this
event from last year. We have made
a commitment as a program to connect
with those that share the bond with our
present players of having worn the
Keelhauler jersey. The stronger
the connection we can make between the
past and the present of this program
bodes very well for the future."
Key in the organization
of the event was Ben Darling, an
individual who has a vested interest in
the program in that he not only attended
school at Maritime but he also served as
an assistant coach. Darling
remarked about the event, "This was a
great day for all of us to come back and
see one another. Also, being able
to see the direction of the program and
where Coach Rooney strives to take it is
reassuring to all alumni that this
program is going to be one that we are
going to be very proud of."
The Keelhauler program
would like to thank all of the players
that returned to participate in the
event: Ben Darling, Cody Gatton, Tom
Kreta, Simon Heller, Joe Tormos, Lee
Urby, Tim Ulibarri, Damon Gomez,
Christian Gopez, Alex Butler, Steve
Barrera, Josh Frederickson, Peter
Anskstenberger, and Joel Henning.
The
2008-2009 season begins November 1st as
Maritime travels to play the Sunbirds of
Fresno Pacific University.
