The Keelhaulers of the
California Maritime Academy won
their third game in a row as
they defeated the Swedes of
Bethany College by a score of
66-52. The win comes on
the heels of Monday night's
victory over the Academy of Arts
University 65-51.
The common
denominator for Maritime's
success in both games was solid
defense. The team held
both opponents under 40%
shooting and continued to prove
why they are ranked as the third
best defense in the country in
respect to points allowed.
Against Bethany, a balanced
offensive attack assisted the
defensive effort as three
Keelhaulers scored in double
figures led by junior point
guard Andrew Medeiros, who
finished with 19 points.
Medeiros also tied for the team
high in rebounds with John
Stiles and Charles Lawerence (8
rebounds). Alex Raj played
one of his better defensive
games in limiting Bethany's
Brandon Miller to one offensive
rebound for the game.
Miller came into the game
averaging over five offensive
rebounds per game.
"The start of the second
half in our past three games has
been critical to our success.
I really like the commitment our
post players have shown and that
effort is becoming contagious.
The most positive thing our
staff takes from the last couple
of weeks is that our team
understands that we are not at
our peak and they are steadfast
in continuing to work towards
that goal,"
commented Head Coach Bryan
Rooney.
The team is back in action
at home this Saturday as they
take on American Sports
University at 7:30pm. Then, on
January 8th the Keelhaulers
return to league action as they
travel back to Holy Names to
play the Hawks. Game time
is 7:30pm
