The Keelhaulers of the
California Maritime Academy opened the
3rd annual Maritime Cup with a
resounding 82-46 victory over Maine
Maritime. The win marks the fourth
win in as many tries in the friendly
confines of Morrow Cove.
As has been the case
with the team's four victories, team
defense took center stage as the
Keelhaulers held Maine to 30% shooting
from the floor. This effort
allowed an eleven point game at half
time to stretch to twenty with fifteen
minutes left in the game.
Offensively, freshman
Zac Kinman had his best offensive game
as a Keelhauler as he hit 5 three
pointers and finished with a career high
18 points. Junior Andrew Medeiros also
played an excellent floor game finishing
with 15 points. Andrew Johnson led
the team with five rebounds in a game
that saw the Keelhaulers forced to play
small because of foul trouble with all
available post players.
Head Coach Bryan Rooney
commented, "We were very pleased at
the mental toughness our players showed
early in the game when shots were not
falling. We did not allow this to
impact our defense in a negative way.
Fortunately, we started shooting the way
we are capable and our defense stayed
consistent."
Cal Maritime moves to
the championship of the Maritime Cup to
take on the Coast Guard Academy, who
were 75-59 winners over SUNY Maritime.
Tip off is scheduled for 7:30pm
