Keelhaulers Cap Banner Year with Awards

The Keelhaulers of Cal Maritime were represented very well as the California Pacific Conference announced the All Conference selections.  Heading up the list was senior point guard Andrew Medeiros (Santa Rosa, CA), who was named the Most Valuable Player of the Conference as well as being named a unanimous First Team All Conference choice.  Joining Medeiros on the All Conference team were juniors Haven Piatt (Lincoln, CA) and Michael Weimer (Campbell, CA).  In addition, freshman Jordan Birchell (Petersburg, AK) was recognized as the Freshman of the Year.  This is the second straight year that a Keelhauler freshman has earned this accolade. Sophomore Josh Greenwell (Vallejo, CA) also earned Honorable Mention All Conference.  Finally, third year head coach, Bryan Rooney, was selected as the Cal Pac Coach of the Year.  This is the second consecutive year Rooney has earned this honor.

As is often the case, individual honors come in the wake of successful team accomplishments and the 2009-2010 year was filled with some outstanding efforts by Cal Maritime.  Chief among these occurred when the team won the first Conference Championship in school history and in the process set the school record for wins for the second year in a row.  Coach Rooney remarked on the success that the program earned this year, “We are extremely happy that Andy, Haven, Michael, Josh, and Jordan were recognized by the coaches in our conference.  They all had outstanding individual years.  More importantly, however, was our team’s understanding that truly playing for each other reaps great collective rewards.  This was a special group and I am confident that we are all motivated to continue the progress over the past three years.  We are losing some outstanding leaders in Andy, Daniel Gresham, and Leo Sarrade.  With our returning players and hopefully a solid recruiting class, we will hopefully be in the mix next year.”
