High School Star Commits to the

Keelhaulers

April 28th, 2010

After leading the California Maritime Academy to the best season in school history, Head Coach Bryan Rooney is intent on building upon the recent success.  The future success of the program took a big step forward with the commitment of Vista del Lago point guard Jaquai Wiley.  Wiley is coming off an outstanding high school career as a true floor general on one of the best teams in Sacramento evidenced by Vista del Lago’s 49-14 record the last two years.  This included a school best 28-4 record this past season and a trip to the State Playoffs.

“We are extremely excited that Jaquai has decided to join our program and help us continue the momentum we have been building.  We recruited Jaquai hard because we really believed that his passion for the game combined with his physical tools would help take us to the next level. When we measure the value of a point guard, our staff always comes back to the question, ‘Does his team win?’  Every time we watched him play, he answered that question with flying colors.  Jaquai is going to have a tremendous career at Cal Maritime!” commented Coach Rooney.

Honored as an All City performer by the Sacramento Bee, Wiley also excels in the classroom and will continue his academic pursuits in Cal Maritime’s International Business program. When asked about his decision to come to Maritime, Jaquai commented on the solid relationships he has already built, “I really like the people in the program and feel it is a great fit for me.”

Wiley joins a solid core of returning players including All Conference Selections Michael Weimer, Haven Piatt, Josh Greenwell and this year’s Freshman of the Year Jordan Birchell.  With the departure of All American senior point guard, Andrew Medeiros, Wiley will be competiting for significant minutes.  Rooney concluded, “With the addition of Jaquai, we are gaining not only an excellent basketball player but a committed student athlete willing to put in the work to be successful on and off the court.  Keelhauler fans will enjoy watching him the next four years!”
