Cal Maritime Loses Thriller To Georgetown
(Sanford, FL, April 18, 2009) – Cal Maritime narrowly missed out on a Final Four berth after losing an excellent game of rugby to Georgetown by 20-17. The lead changed hands four times as both teams played open attacking rugby in the 80 degree heat in Sanford, Florida.
The Keelhaulers started strongly and went ahead by 10-0 after tries from Bobbie Rather and a 95 meter attack launched by Steve Ouimet resulted in a Kevin Hawke touchdown at the other end of the field.
Georgetown scored two tries to take the lead 14-10 at half time.
Rufus Walker scored three minutes into the second half to re-take the lead for Cal Maritime by 17-14. Georgetown kicked a penalty to tie the game up at 17-17 before they scored another penalty to take the lead 20-17.
Cal Maritime attacked for the final twenty minutes and excellent defense from Georgetown kept the Keelhaulers at bay. The result ends the season for Cal Maritime while Georgetown move on to the Final Four in Stanford, CA.
“We’re disappointed that we have been eliminated but we made too many errors with the ball to get the win at the end”, said coach Edward Roberts. “Georgetown fought hard to defend and were an excellent opponent today. We wish them all the best in the Final Four”.
