Cal Maritime Soccer
 Looking to the Future

The Cal Maritime Soccer Program is going through a renaissance coming off a turn around season in 2006. Last season saw a new coach appointed 1 week before the first game, and the team was picked 3 days before the first game kicked off.

It took the program 8 games to gel together and reach match fitness and resulted in the team winning 2 of the their last 3 games including narrowly losing away from home 2-1 to the team placed second in the conference (they scored their goals from two penalties).

This season, the program has embarked on an extensive recruitment campaign assessing players at the CIF Sectionals in Sacramento as well as top club players at the Nomads Tournament in San Diego and the Irvine Strikers Harvest Cup in Orange County. We will also be assessing players at the FC Portland Showcase in January as well as the College Showcase in Las Vegas in March. Add to this the fact that the coach referees 5 days per week and is constantly looking for players both in indoor and outdoor soccer games.

Here are some quotes from our current players describing both what they learned this season as well as their thoughts about the soccer program:

“Just getting back on its feet, great bunch of guys with a lot of heart, huge improvements, lots of potential to be a top team.”

“Hard work pays off. You don’t have to be the most skilled players, but if you play well together you can have amazing results.”

“Complete 180 degrees from previous years. It’s a good group of shipmates who are dedicated.”

“A good mixture of hard work and fun. You’ll know these guys the rest of your life.”

“How a soccer program should be run, with discipline and integrity”

“Nothing compares to working hard and fighting with heart. You may have good skills but it is worth nothing unless you put your heart into the game.”

“The program is in the infant stage of becoming something great.”

“The program is taking a turn for the better and I am proud to be a part of an up and coming soccer program.”

“A great program that’s just beginning to take off into an extremely dedicated team of soccer players.”

“It’s a new program with a good coach and a strong core of athletes with which a strong team can be built around.”
